battle of the nameless sky

January 5th, 2009 by sbelectrical

The battle with Sky is a perfect example of the sonic pattern that is throughout the film. As Nameless and Sky battle, we hear the string instrument that is played by the blind elder. We also hear every single drop of rain that hit’s the room. The timber of the water is not right. It is should not sound as loud as it does and we should not hear every single drop of rain. Therefore this cues us to the possibility that this scene is not real. Juxtaposed with the soft lone tone sounds of the instrument and the water, is the sound of Nameless’s sword and Sky’s spear clashing together to form a harsh metallic sound. The battle starts off in their minds. This is clear because the battle that precedes is shot in black and white. When the real fight takes place the sound of the rain and the peaceful music of the stringed instrument makes the clashing of the blades seem louder then it actually is.
Nameless’s version of what happened at the calligraphy school is shot mostly in red. This is because the actions that take place in this narrative never really happen.

the temporal structure of the dark side

January 5th, 2009 by sbelectrical

The temporal structure of The Dark Side of the Heart consists of juxtaposition between Oli’s fantasy and his friends reality. Timelessness occurs only with Oli. When he is with his friends time seems to have more of an importance. The artist is always in jail and Oli comes to pick him up. Time has been clearly passed. Also when a local cook asks Oli and his friends to come to his wedding party, Oli asks when the party will be held. The cook replies that it will be held in one month. Therefore during these scenes there is no sense of loneliness and Oli has temporally put his quest for love on hold. When he goes back to his own life, the emotion of love and loneliness is that much more powerful.
Oli slowly gets more involved with Ana each time he sees her. He is first drawn to her because she too loves poetry. There sex gets more and more graphic towards the end of the film. There sex is so good that they start to fly off the bed. Throughout the film, Oli speaks of a woman who can fly. Therefore this scene shows that he has found the woman he has been searching for.

changes in the fantasy life

January 4th, 2009 by sbelectrical

Therefore we know even before anything occurs that the mustache woman will get dumped by the trap door in the bed. However it is unrealistic to think he actually has a trap door in his bed. Therefore this fantasy sequence is a way of showing not only Oli’s immaturity, but also how he moves on to his next woman in his quest for love. On this quest he starts to slowly change. For example with the blind woman he does not use the trap door. A major reason for Oli’s maturity comes from his consciousness. A cow acting as Oli’s mother shows her disapproval in the way he has been living his life. Also Oli’s voice of reason (Lady Death) keeps telling him to “grow up”. In a coffee shop scene, Oli speaks to death about formula one death versus a mediocre death. This shows that Oli wants to die doing something he loves instead of letting time slowly bring death. Therefore this scene foreshadows that Oli’s fantasy life and his quest for true love will come to a deadly crash.

bobo and sissi

December 31st, 2008 by sbelectrical

This closes a gap of his behavior with the furnace during the early exposition. Sissi finds a meaning in her life and is very persistent in getting what she wants which in this case is Bobo. Since every fairy tale has a happy ending, the audience expects them to pull off the robbery, fall in love, and fight their inner demons. Before any love can exist between Bobo and Sissi, Bobo needs to resolve his past. Bobo’s brother tells him to get off the toilet. This is the reason why he is so distant. The abstract implies a love story, however can a warrior and a princess really live happily every after? After all he is not a prince, therefore their love is forbidden. Even though their goals are the same, which is to escape, will they resolve their goals together? Fate has brought them together, but will fate drive them apart? The abstract constantly questions our expectations.
Multiple complicating actions arise throughout the film. As for the robbery, the main obstacle comes from the security guard who wakes up in the middle of the robbery. This causes the alarm to go off leading to Bobo’s brother’s death. A warrior must overcome many obstacles in his life.

get off the toilet

December 31st, 2008 by sbelectrical

Sissi’s quest to find Bobo leads to a complicating action involving a gun store owner who is unwilling to give out the address of Bobo. However she is able to get the information because of Otto. If Otto was never with her at the point of attack, she would have never found the gun store and she would not been able to find Bobo’s home. Therefore fate is working to bring Bobo and Sissi together.
The film has multiple motives and goals. Since the film is working on three levels, there are three different goals. In relation to the robbery, the goal is for Bobo and his brother to rob the back successfully. In relation to the love story, the goal is for Sissi and Bobo to live happily ever after. Finally the personality goals of each of the main characters is to leave their existing worlds. Bobo needs to “get off the toilet” while Sissi needs to leave the ward.

In order to achieve their goals, Bobo and Sissi change as the film moves along. The warrior turns out to be a widower who has gland problems. Therefore he is not the sensitive person portrayed in the beginning. Also he dreams of his dead wife when he hugs the furnace.

energy on the plane

December 24th, 2008 by sbelectrical

I use to love flying inside of planes. I remember when i was a little kid, i would love going over seas to visit my relatives. I really enjoyed all of the things that were associated with flying. I even liked the food that they provided on the plane. I liked the food because they were all individualized. I also thought that it was amazing how they could fit all of that food into tiny carts. I loved watching soon to be released movies on the plane. One of my fondest movie memories occured while i was flying to South Korea. I was watching Rob Riener’s A Few Good Men starring Tom Cruise. The movie made me all inspired. I was moved and very touched. By the end of the film, i wanted to become a marine. It was either that or become a naval lawyer. If i didn’t hate school, i would have tried to become like Tom Cruises character. The biggest reason why i loved flying was the energy that you feel inside of a plane. You feel like you are a part of a magic trick. You feel amazed and satisfied.

why we all love celebrities

December 24th, 2008 by sbelectrical

I think that we all want to be better people. I am not talking about anything meaningful. I am talking about the superficial qualities that makes a man better then another man. Usually this deals with good looks and money. Usually speaking, celebrities are better versions of ourselves. If you think about you favorite actors, you will notice similarities between that star and you. I like certain celebrities because they remind me of the guy that i want to be. I like those celebrities because on my best day, i am kind of like them. They are like alter egos. The celebrities that we all love to talk about are living the lives that we all want. They are always surrounded by beautiful women. They have all the money in the world. They work at something that they would probably do for free. I think sports athletes and movie stars have it the best. They get to do things that they are really passionate about. They get to do fun things and get paid a lot of money for it. I think that is why we all love celebrities.

why parents cause you stress

December 24th, 2008 by sbelectrical

I am home for the holidays. The moment that i got here, i wanted to relax and just enjoy my childhood home. But, i get really stressed and annoyed by my parents. I think that i have a short fuse when it comes to my parents because they are my parents. I am getting older and so are they. This makes the conversations go by really slow. They keep repeating the same things that they said moments earlier. I honestly want to have a lot of great dialogue with my parents. But, it is not possible because they want to tell me everything. I love my parents to death. I want to see them happy and i want to be there for them. But, i also want to enjoy my youth. I want to learn by example. The advice that they give me will only mean something when i become their age. I know that they want to pass the knowledge down to me, but it just doesn’t work out that way. The things that they say just eat up at my pride. They things that they say just sound like nagging.

Believe it or Not

December 22nd, 2008 by sbelectrical

The purpose of this article is to show how causality functions in Princess and the Warrior (Tom Tykwer) in relation to the narrative schema. The abstract gives off the impression of a fairy tale which will ultimately lead to a happy ending as most fairy tales do. This might cause the audience to believe the narrative will move towards a love story involving a warrior and a princess. The narrative is a classic narrative with a high degree of closure. The closure comes from a cause and effect chain of events that happen throughout the fabula. Causality can only be understood after the fact. So why tell this story this way? The film works on three levels. First there is the story of the robbery that Bobo and his brother plan. Second is the love story between Bobo and Sissi. Finally the inner personal problems they are going through. Each level has their own line of action, goals, and obstacles. However each get resolved in the end. Therefore, a large degree of parallelism and closure frames the causal structure.

causality in the film world

December 22nd, 2008 by sbelectrical

The film has two goals…the goal of the female and the goal of the male…the male needs to get off the toilet…he knows it deep down inside and the person closest to him know it…his brother.

The goal of the woman is not set until she meets bobo…she falls in love…cause he came back…he saved her. Her life has totally changed…her life serves a singular purpose now…before it was to help others….try to do things to help others in need…but now she has found a need from within…she can now live for herself…want and do what she desires.

Destiny makes achieving the goal possible. Causality is in short…a subdivision of destiny. Fate. Things happen for a reason. We are led in directions because of previous actions…cause and effect. We think we are in control…but sometimes we end up in a place where it seems too coincidental. This film explores that possibility. And the whole causality leads the films narrative. Without causitly and a good use of the narrative schema…this film might not have worked out.
